Our Tailscale review
Tailscale builds a WireGuard mesh between your devices. Install the client, sign in with an identity provider, and every machine can reach every other machine by name, through NAT, across continents, without opening a single firewall port. The experience is close to magic the first time you use it.
The security model is worth understanding. Traffic flows directly between your devices, encrypted end to end with WireGuard; Tailscale's coordination server distributes public keys and helps with NAT traversal but does not carry your data, except through DERP relays when a direct path is impossible. If you would rather not trust that control plane at all, Headscale is an open-source reimplementation you can host yourself.
For businesses the interesting part is access control. ACLs are written as a versioned policy file rather than clicked through a console, so network permissions live in Git alongside everything else. Higher tiers add device posture checks, SSH session recording, SCIM provisioning and audit logs.
Exit nodes let you route all traffic through a chosen device, which is how people use Tailscale as a personal VPN: run an exit node on a home machine or a cheap VPS and your laptop appears to be there. That is genuinely useful, but the bandwidth is whatever that machine has, and the IP is yours alone, so it is not an anonymity tool.
The free tier covers three users and a hundred devices, which is far past what most home labs need. Paid seats start around $6 a month and the jump to Premium is steep but buys real governance features.
Recommended without reservation for connecting infrastructure. Pair it with a commercial VPN if you also need to appear as someone else on the public internet.

Is Tailscale a VPN like NordVPN?
No. It connects your own devices into a private network. It can route your internet traffic through an exit node you control, but it does not offer a pool of shared IPs or country switching.
Can Tailscale see my traffic?
No. Traffic is encrypted end to end between your devices with WireGuard. The coordination server handles key distribution and NAT traversal only, and you can replace it with self-hosted Headscale.
Is the free tier enough for a small team?
