Our ExpressVPN review
ExpressVPN sells ease. Install it anywhere, press the button, and it works, on more platforms than any competitor including a first-party router firmware and the Aircove, a home router with the VPN built in. If you want the person you bought this for to never call you about it, this is the product.
Under the hood, Lightway is ExpressVPN's own lightweight protocol in the same performance class as WireGuard, and it has been through outside code review by Cure53. TrustedServer runs the whole fleet from RAM, so every reboot wipes state, and KPMG has examined the no-logs claim.
The strongest real-world evidence for the no-logs claim came in 2017, when Turkish investigators seized an ExpressVPN server and found nothing usable on it. That is the kind of test marketing copy cannot fake.
The complication is ownership. ExpressVPN was bought by Kape Technologies in 2021 for close to a billion dollars. Kape was formerly Crossrider, an ad-tech company whose software platform was abused to distribute adware years earlier, and it now also owns CyberGhost, Private Internet Access and ZenMate, plus a stable of VPN review sites. Nothing has been shown to be wrong with ExpressVPN's service since the acquisition, but a company that owns both the products and several of the sites that rank them is worth knowing about. Separately, a 2021 report tied ExpressVPN's then CIO to prior work for a UAE cyber-surveillance program; he stayed on, which some buyers will weigh.
Features are good but not exhaustive: split tunneling, a solid kill switch, obfuscation that works in restrictive countries, an ad blocker, and dedicated IPs on the Pro tier. There is no multi-hop and no port forwarding, both of which cheaper rivals offer.
Pricing is the weak point. Around $3.49/mo on a 28-month prepay is competitive, but renewal lands near $99.95 a year and the monthly plan is $12.95. Buy ExpressVPN when app quality and router support matter more to you than the price gap, and reassess at renewal.
