Proton VPN Review

Proton VPN comes from the team behind Proton Mail, and the ownership structure is unusual in a good way: Proton AG is majority owned by the non-profit Proton Foundation, which means there is no private-equity exit waiting to change the incentives. In a category where several household names have been bought by ad-tech-adjacent holding companies, that is a meaningful differentiator.

Every client is open source and audited annually by Securitum, with the full reports published rather than summarized. Combine that with Swiss jurisdiction, which sits outside the 5, 9 and 14 Eyes arrangements and has no VPN data retention mandate, and Proton has the least hand-waving privacy story of any major provider.

The free plan deserves its reputation. Unlimited data, no advertising, no logging, no time limit, in exchange for one device and a handful of countries at medium speed. Almost every other free VPN funds itself by selling something about you; Proton funds it with paid subscriptions. If someone asks you for a free VPN recommendation, this is the answer.

Paid features are complete: Secure Core routes through hardened servers in Switzerland, Iceland or Sweden before exiting elsewhere, Stealth defeats most protocol-blocking networks, and port forwarding, NetShield ad blocking, Tor over VPN and split tunneling are all included rather than upsold. Speeds on WireGuard sit near the top of the field, and streaming works across the major platforms on the Plus tier.

The gaps are modest. There is no round-the-clock live chat, which will annoy people used to Nord and Express, and the fleet is not entirely RAM-only. The apps are excellent but carry slightly more configuration surface than ExpressVPN's, which is the price of the extra control.

Proton VPN is our top recommendation for anyone who wants privacy as the primary product rather than as a marketing wrapper, and the Proton Unlimited bundle is genuinely good value if you also want encrypted mail, storage and a password manager.
