NordVPN Review

NordVPN has been the default recommendation in this category for years, and the reason is boring consistency. The NordLynx protocol, which is WireGuard with a double-NAT layer bolted on to avoid storing user IPs on the server, keeps NordVPN at or near the top of nearly every independent speed test, and the network is large enough that you rarely land on a congested server.

The privacy story is stronger than most. Nord commissioned its first no-logs audit in 2018 and has repeated the exercise several times since, most recently with Deloitte, and it moved its entire fleet to diskless RAM-only servers after a 2018 breach at a rented Finnish data center. That breach is worth knowing about: an attacker reached one server through an insecure remote management tool the data center left exposed. No user traffic was shown to have been compromised, but Nord was slow to disclose it, and the infrastructure overhaul that followed was a direct response.

Feature depth is where the extra money goes. You get obfuscated servers for restrictive networks, double-hop routes, Onion over VPN, split tunneling on most platforms, a genuinely good ad and malware blocker in Threat Protection, dedicated IPs as a paid add-on, and Meshnet, which links your own devices into a private network at no extra cost. Port forwarding is the one notable omission.

Streaming works. Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Prime Video and Hulu all unblocked from multiple regions during our checks, and Nord fixes detection faster than most when a platform tightens up. The apps are also the easiest of the big three to hand to a non-technical person: one big Connect button, sensible defaults, no jargon on the first screen.

The pricing is the usual VPN bait and switch, done at scale. The $3.49/mo headline needs 27 months paid up front, and the plan renews near $12.99/mo. That is still not expensive by category standards, but the honest way to think about NordVPN is roughly $95 for the first two years and then a decision point, not $3.49 a month forever.

Choose NordVPN if you want the fewest compromises and are not ideologically opposed to closed-source apps or to a large commercial provider. If you want minimal data collection and open code above all else, Mullvad or IVPN will suit you better; if you want the same breadth for less, Surfshark undercuts it.
